Shelf-mark:
C 1206
Siglum:
P-G C 1206
Subcategory of book:
Gradual
Category:
monophony
Completeness:
fragment
Document type:
manuscript
Date:
13th - 14th century
Contents:
Chants for the Rogation days before Ascension Thursday, and for the period from Pentecost to Trinity Sunday. Very interesting fragment, it contains chants that do not belong to the standard Gregorian repertory and which may reflect a local tradition. The contents partly coincide with the texts in the Braga Missal of 1498. Parallels can be found between the rite for the Rogations in this fragment and the version of the Gaillac Gradual, which is similar to Braga.
Material:
parchment
Condition of document:
Damaged. The two pages of this bifolium are not consecutive. The fragment is mutilated/torn along the borders, especially at the bottom. Two stickers on fol. Av, the bigger one covers part of the chant. The text is: "(N. 1) Procuratorio. S. João de [...] 1576 a 1577. Lembranças curiosas de 1577 a 1580". The second library sticker shows a probably ancient shelf-mark "1648 [...]". Other reference written in ink: A-5-2-149 (also on Ar, without the first letter). Holes are in correspondence to the central folder of the bifolium. Set of pricks along the vertical external border of Ar, Bv. The folders indicate that the fragment was used as a book cover. Wrinkles and spots of humidity.
Foliation/Pagination:
The original foliation is lost, traces of it can be found at the top of fol. Bv; however one can read many references with roman numerals to the pages where the chant written as incipit could be found as full text.
Page layout:
Fol. A: ca 250 x ca 270. Fol. B (Non uos): ca 235 x ca 270.
Type of script:
Gothic
Type of notation:
Aquitanian (Portuguese variety)
Decoration:
Very simple decoration. Plain initials in red and blue. Display script in red. Text and notation in black. The notation is written around a red line, a later hand added a letter 'F' at the beginning of chant 001879 which represents the pitch of the red line.
