P-G (Guimarães) Arquivo Municipal Alfredo Pimenta
Shelf-mark:
N 656
Siglum:
P-G N 656
Subcategory of book:
Gradual
Category:
monophony
Completeness:
fragment
Document type:
manuscript
Date:
13th - 14th cent.
Tradition:
Aquitanian
Contents:
Non-central bifolium. It contains chants for the feasts Purificatio Mariae, Vig. Joannis Bapt., Joannis Baptistae. It is worth noticing that the tractus 'Diffusa est' (Cantus ID g02214) and its verses (see fol. Arv) have been indexed in Cantus Index only in three sources, in all cases for the liturgical feast 'Purificatio Mariae'. The sources are F-Pn 776, P-BRs Ms. 34 and E-SAu Ms 2637 (see http://cantusindex.org/id/g02214). The following tractus 'Nunc dimittis' and its verses (fol. Av) seem to be also quite rare, being indexed in Cantus Index only in AUS-Sfl 376 and F-Pn 776, in both cases for 'Purificatio Mariae' (see http://cantusindex.org/id/g00076).
Material:
parchment
Condition of document:
The fragment is in very poor condition, it serves as book cover and most of its original content is unreadable due to tears, holes, stains, wrinkles and ink vanished especially on the external book cover, that is fols. Ar-Bv.
Page layout:
Full page.
Type of notation:
Aquitanian (Portuguese variety)
Description of the notation:

Medium size neumes around a red line. Due to the poor material condition of the fragment, it is not possible to ascertain the original presence of custodes. The lozenge is not used consistently and, occasionally, the difference between a lozenge and a more or less square punctum is not clearly defined, see for example the neumes over ‘in letitia’ on fol. Av, 2nd text line. The lozenge is used either in isolation and as part of descending/ascending patterns of two or more notes on one syllable.

Inscriptions and marks:
Several later-hand inscriptions on fols. Ar and Br.
