Date:
15th - 16th cent.

Contents:
The analysis of the contents of this heavily mutilated bifolium did not allow to identify which folio (A or B) came originally first. Some of the chants in this fragment have been identified and attributed to a specific liturgical occasions on the basis of the comparison with other manuscripts, mainly the early 16th-century Sanctoral Antiphoner P-BRs Ms. 28. Unfortunately, some of the chants on this fragment remained unidentified. In detail: the chants on folio Ar are found in the same order in the office for 'Matthaei' in P-BRs Ms. 28, fols. 173v-174r (http://pemdatabase.eu/image/4738). The responsory and its verse end the second nocturn while the antiphon opens the third nocturn. Folio Av: to this date there is no other manuscript indexed in any of the Cantus-Index databases which has the Antiphon 'Placentes' (Cantus ID 004294) immediately followed by the Responsory 'Euntibus' (Cantus ID 006678). Both chants are commonly associated to the office for the 'Comm. Evangelistarum' or 'Matthaei'. These two chants are not found in P-BRs Ms. 28. The liturgical feast associated to these two chants was left undetermined in the musical index of fol. Av. Folio Br: the three antiphons we found here can be read in the same order in the second nocturn of the office for 'Matthaei' on fol. 173r in Ms. 28 (see http://pemdatabase.eu/musical-item/20868). Folio Bv: we can read here 5 text lines alternated with music. It was not possible to identify the chant(s) written on the first two lines (further info at http://pemdatabase.eu/musical-item/43038 and http://pemdatabase.eu/musical-item/43039). However, on the last three text and music lines it is possible to identify excerpts of the responsory 'Cum ambularent' (Cantus ID 006353) which is also found on fol. 175r on P-BRs Ms. 28 at the end of the third nocturn for 'Matthaei'. Unfortunately, the previous chants in Ms. 28 (that is, the responsory 'Statura' and its verse 'Per quattuor') do not exactly match the previous unidentified chant(s) on fol. Bv in the fragment. Further details on the musical and liturgical contents of fragment P-G C 1372 can be found in its musical index (see the box in the right-hand side of this page).
Material:
parchment
Condition of document:
Fragment C 1372 consist of a bifolium heavily mutilated to fit the size of the book it currently covers. The ink is partially vanished on fol. Av (external cover); library sticker on the same page. Later-hand inscriptions by several hands on fols. Av (top-right corner), Br (top), and Bv-Ar (top). Some of the inscriptions are now almost unreadable. Fragments C 1372 and N 133 (available at http://pemdatabase.eu/source/43046) in the Arquivo Municipal Alfredo Pimenta of Guimarães share the same codicological features (text and music palaeography, mise en page, decoration etc.) and it is possible to surmise that the two fragments originally belonged to the same book.
Page layout:
One full-page column.
Type of notation:
Aquitanian
Description of the notation:

Large size neumes. The difference between a lozenge and a more or less square punctum is always clearly defined. The special punctum (rhombus) is randomly used at different heights always as part of compound neumes in a descending melodic movement. The special punctum is not used in isolation.
