manuscript

12th century

Fer. 6 p. Pascha

Sabbato in Albis
Contents (feasts):
Octava Paschae
Material:
parchment
Condition of document:
Bifolium slightly damaged. The upper and lower borders are trimmed but without loss of contents. The external edges have folds and wrinkles. The upper right corner of fol. Br is torn.
Page layout:
Folios A and B: ca 285 x 250 mm. Text arranged in two columns 350 x 95 mm. 35 wl, some with notation.
Type of notation:
Aquitanian
Description of the notation:

Small-size neumes around a red line. The difference between a lozenge and a square punctum is not clearly defined, indeed the square puncta have the side edges slanted to the right and the square looks more like a parallelogram. When the ‘square’ puncta are more slanted, they take almost the shape of a lozenge (but no sub-semitonal meaning is associated with it). The custodes are consistently used and they have the head on the left of the line (according to the typical Iberian style).

Decoration:
Simple decoration, black or red initials.
Inscriptions and marks:
On fol. Bv above the incipit of the Offertorium "Angelus Domini", an ancient hand provided the folio number where the full chant could be originally read. A modern hand wrote "28" in red ink between the two columns of fol. Ar. On the upper right corner of the same folio a modern hand wrote "Caixa 288 n. 3" in blue ink. Further inscriptions were written on fols. Ar and Bv (along the left border) and they provide information about the provenance of the fragment, which was used as book cover in the Tombo of Santa Marinha of Peruzello (in 1541). Prozelo is located ca 15 km north-east of Braga.
