monophony

fragment
Document type:
manuscript
Date:
13th century
Material:
parchment
Condition of document:
Single leaf fragment. The recto is slightly damaged while the verso is in poor condition. The fragment was heavily trimmed and it served for long time as book cover (see the horizontal fold and sewing holes). The trimming caused loss of contents, especially at the top of the fragment and along the lateral borders. Damp patches and some dirtiness on the verso (which was the external side of the book cover). Traces of a library sticker - now removed - on the verso. Creases all over the fragment.
Page layout:
Size: ca 190 x ca 345 mm. Text area: c. 190 x c. 285. 31 text lines, some with notation. Text arranged in one column.
Type of notation:
Aquitanian (Portuguese variety)
Decoration:
Basic decoration: only red and black plain initials. Display script in red. Text and notation in black. Neumes placed around a red line.
Inscriptions and marks:
Three inscriptions on the verso. "6" is the most recent one and it is written in red ink. The other two are "[...] de 1566 1699 [...]" and "Barcelos", the latter is placed immediately the second inscription. By looking at these inscriptions, Avelino de Jesus da Costa identified this fragment as coming from St Tiago in Creixomil, located ca 30 km west of Braga.
Remarks:
P. Avelino de Jesus da Costa referes to this fragment as: "Registo Paroquial - Distrito de Braga - Concelho de Barcelos - 257 – Creixomil (São Tiago) – Livro primeiro mixto – 1564-1599".
